Babies Know When Mom's Upset:

Little babies, even newborns, can sense anxiety. In fact, they not only sense it, but it carries over onto them. If a parent is anxious, a baby knows and will likely become cranky and irritable too.

This can end up being a really bad thing because then it ends up going in a circle. If mom or dad was already upset for some reason, and then baby gets upset and starts crying, this will only make the parent more upset. When the parent gets more upset, so will the baby, and so on.

The best way to avoid this situation is for mom or dad to take a break from the baby when they are upset. This may make you feel like a bad parent, or like you can't handle everything, or a million other unhealthy feelings.

You should ignore these thoughts, though, and know that you are actually doing what is best for the baby.

If you are upset, hand the baby off to the other parent and take a walk to calm down. If you don't have another parent to call on, take the child to a babysitter or see if a friend can give you a break for a while.

if you can't take a break from baby, the best thing to do is to try to put off thinking about whatever it is that has you upset so that you can help baby relax. It is obviously not an easy thing to do, but if you can manage it, it can help your baby feel better.
This also has another benefit to it: you started acting like you felt better in order to make your baby feel better, and in turn, you actually were able to ease your mind a lot more than you expected.

Sometimes, being forced to focus completely on your child for their benefit can also be beneficial for the parent.
If, however, you are in the middle of something that is so pressing that you are unable to calm down enough to help your child relax, you need to figure out a way to enlist some help so that you can deal with what you need to, and your baby can relax, too.
