Back To School :

One of the most important times during a school year for parents and their children occurs before it even starts! With summer fading, parents race to get their children ready for the upcoming academic year. In addition to preparing them mentally and physically for going back to school, parents must also ensure that their children have all the supplies and tools they might need for the year ahead. For many parents, their own school days are far behind them, so it easy to forget how hard readjustment can be. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to make the transition easier for your child. Follow the guidelines below to ensure that your child is ready by the time the first day of school arrives:

• Equip & Supply

Make sure your children have everything they might need during the upcoming year. This includes school supplies, school clothes, backpacks, and lunch boxes. For your home, consider getting desks and chairs to help create an environment that will promote good study habits. These things may seem extremely basic and obvious, but it’s easy to get wrapped up in summertime fun and not think of them until the need arises. If this happens, your children may have a difficult time completing assignments or keeping up with their classmates. Ask them to give you a list of supplies they’ll need. Of course, it isn’t necessary to buy your children everything they want, but having cool new supplies, clothes, and accessories can help them feel more confident, prepared, and less nervous about going back to school.

•Mentally Prepare

Although having the right tools is important, don’t overlook the need to mentally prepare your children for going back to school. It is often the last thing on their minds, so be sure that your children know what date school will resume and remind them as the day gets closer. Taking them shopping for clothes and supplies will help it seem more real and may even stir up a little bit of excitement. Also, if you know who their teachers will be, let your children know. It can even help to call their friends’ parents and find out if the kids will be in the same class. While this sometimes results in disappointing news, at least the kids are prepared in advance. Another way to help mentally prepare kids for going back to school is to take them to the school’s open house or “Meet the Teacher” night. This is a great way for kids to meet their teacher, find their classroom, and see where they will be sitting. Having this information before they go back to school will help ease your children’s apprehension.

• Physically Readjust

Physically prepare kids for going back to school—Since most kids physically adjust to summertime (staying up late, sleeping late, eating whenever they want, etc.), this is a very important aspect of preparing kids for their first day back. You should try to get your child readjusted to their school schedule at least two weeks ahead of time. Start establishing ground rules by adjusting their bedtime back to school hours, and begin waking them up every day at the same time as they would get up for a school day. Additionally, start having lunch at the same time the school does and have dinner at the same time you will when school is back in session. While it may seem like doing this robs kids of the last couple of weeks of their summer break, it can be very beneficial to them on the first day of school.

Putting in the effort to mentally prepare, physically readjust, and equipping your children with the right supplies will help ease the transition from summer to school. Going back to school is always hard, but with these tips, you can make it easier, and your children will appreciate you for it!
