Home >  Information A-ZAll Kids Information Articles Biting

Babies go through many phases, and one that is very irritating (and often painful) is the biting phase. This isn't so bad if the baby reaches this phase before they get teeth, but it usually doesn't work that way.

Instead, it usually comes right after they have grown just enough teeth to really hurt someone when they bite them.

You may not expect that a small baby could bite so hard that it would hurt much, but after all that sucking they do on bottles, babies have very strong jaws, and when they bite, they bite hard, often hard enough to leave a bruise or draw blood. This is another one of those things that it is important to put a stop to, especially if your child will be around other kids. Many daycares won't even take babies who bite, and while this may make the parents mad, it makes sense. If they allow the child who is constantly biting other kids, they will have many parents griping at them, and possibly withdrawing their kids because they keep getting bitten.

Some parents believe that they should lightly bite their child back, just to show them that it hurts. Whether or not this works is debatable.

Another method of dealing with biting is to barely pop their mouth and tell them no very firmly. Just as with the biting back method, you only do it enough to grab their attention, not to hurt them.

These methods work with some children and not with others, and the only other option is to simply tell your child no firmly each time they do it and limit their interaction with other children in the meantime.

Just as with all other phases, you should just remember that, whatever way you try to get them to stop, the phase will pass in time, and everything will be back to normal again soon.
