Bottle Nipples:

If you will be bottle-feeding your baby, it may seem like a simple decision as to what type of bottles you will use. You either want the Playtex kind with the bags, or you don't, right? Well, that is definitely the biggest decision to make, but it's not the only one. You also must decide which type of nipple you will use. This may seem trivial, especially since many people will give gift packs at baby showers or when the baby arrives, and part of these may include bottles. You tend to take whatever you have, and plan on using it, without even noticing if all the nipples are the same (and in all likelihood, they probably aren't). What many soon-to-be parents are never informed of, though, is that most babies will get accustomed to one type of nipple, and then refuse to take any other. This is fine if the parents are lucky and have ten of the same type of nipple, but if you have five different kinds and only three of each kind, it can pose a problem.

The best way to avoid this scenario is to, even before the baby is born, pick two types of nipples can buy several of those. This way, if you try the first one on your baby and they won't take it, you have a backup. Doing it this way also means that you will have plenty of a couple of kinds, as opposed to a couple of many kinds.

Sometimes, it won't just be that a baby got used to a certain kind and won't take any other, though. Instead, it might be that a certain kind of nipple flows too fast or slow for your little one. This is why it is a good idea to buy a couple of different stages of the same shaped nipple. Each stage of nipple has an approximate age on it, which relates to the flow and how hard the baby has to suck to get the formula or breast milk out. But, the ages listed don't pertain to all babies. Some babies suck harder than others, and some babies choke easier than others. This makes it nearly impossible to be able to tell which kind your baby will prefer. Just as with so many things involved in parenting, it's basically trial and error.

If you will be breast feeding as well as bottle feeding, it is often best to buy the nipples that resemble the mother's as much as possible. There are bottle nipples that are skinny, very round, some have bumps on the sides of them, and some don't. You will want to buy the ones that most closely resemble the real thing, because, just as with bottle feeding, once a baby gets used to one thing, they may not be very willing to switch. This is especially true with breast fed babies using the bottle. Some mothers report that they have a very difficult time getting their baby to accept a bottle at all, and the less it resembles the mother's breast, the harder it will be.

Another thing to be careful of is buying nipples with a wider base than the average bottle nipple. When your baby gets older, you will likely want to buy the types of bottles that are shaped easier for the baby to hold. The problem though, is that a lot of these bottles are made to hold the smaller nipple rings, which means that babies who are used to the wide-based nipples may not get to use these.

In most cases, many nipples are interchangeable, so even if your baby uses a different type of nipple than is in the bottle you want to buy, you can switch them out. The important thing to pay attention to is the nipple ring. If the nipple ring is the same size as the ones you are currently using, you should be able to switch them out without any problems.
