Getting a Break - Enlisting Help:
Some parents feel that if they ask for help with the baby, or want a night out away from baby, that it means that they aren't capable parents, and that they aren't good enough. This is simply not true, though.
Anytime you feel like you need a break, you should take one. If you are frustrated with the baby (and it is perfectly natural to get this way sometimes), it is much better for you to get the break that you need than for you to be frustrated.
Calling up a family member and asking them to come over and watch the baby for a while, or having your spouse watch the baby for you to get a break, can be a great thing to do.
No matter how guilty this makes you feel, it is important to be at your best when you are dealing with baby. Of course, you will have those days where you are frustrated, and there is nothing wrong with this.
Too many moms feel like they have to do everything, and that it would be wrong to ask for assistance. Unfortunately, by trying to be supermom, they end up putting too much pressure on themselves and need a break even more than if they weren't worried about it at all.
If you want to be able to give your baby your all, it is much easier to do this if you are willing to accept help when it is offered, and ask for it when it is needed.
In the very beginning, you can have relatives come over to watch the baby while you cook or clean. Many people would love to do this, because they want to spend as much time as possible with the baby.
This is the best way to do it, because when the baby is really young, you will want to be around in case you are needed. You likely aren't ready at this point to actually leave your baby in the care of someone else, but you can still get a break without having to do this by having the help come to your house.
Then, as the baby gets older, and you feel more secure in the thought of leaving them with someone, you can start small. Leave the baby for 20 minutes just to go for a walk and get some fresh air.
It will feel really strange at first—not having your child with you—but it is something you will learn to enjoy. At this point, you don’t have a whole lot of quiet days ahead of you, so when you can get a few moments here and there, you should take advantage of it and enjoy it while you can.
As the baby gets even older, and you get used to leaving your child for limited amounts of time, it will become easier to leave the baby for longer and longer periods of time. Then, before you know it, you will be able to go out one night with your spouse and have a baby-free quiet evening like you haven't had in months.
You might even be surprised to learn that (aside from those phone calls every 30 minutes or so) you aren't too worried about the baby and you are actually enjoying yourself.
