Changes and Kids:

When you will be making a big change in your child's life, such as divorce, a big move, or a new baby, you will need to prepare your child in advance.

Of course, it is not expected of you to forewarn your child of every move you decide to make in your life, but for big changes, it is a good thing to do. Small children don't usually do well with change. In fact, to children, major changes affect the stability and security your child feels in his or her world. This is why it is important to prepare them for what will come.

As your child gets older, you should consider their thoughts and feelings before making a decision. This is not to say that you should make a decision based only on what your child wants, but that it should be a huge factor in the decision-making process. You have to remember that your child, although spawned from you, is his own person. The decisions you make will greatly affect his life.

If you find out you are having another baby, let your child be the first to know. Make sure he is a big part of it during the entire pregnancy, and after the baby is born let him be an important aspect in the new baby’s life.
If you find out you will be moving out of state, you will need to tell your child as early as possible. Tell them what they will expect in the new place, and if it is possible, take your child to the new house to let them see it. Just showing up at a new house one day and being expected to relax there is not an easy thing for a small child to have to face.

But, if you prepare them by visiting the house, by letting them spend time with their friends and be able to say good-bye before they leave, it can help ease them into the big adjustment.

Granted, no matter what you tell your child, they may not be fully prepared for whatever change will be taking place. It is important to point out the benefits of whatever it is. Even if the parents are splitting up and your child will be seeing one parent only on the weekends, you can help show them the good points of it. Show them how they will get to have two bedrooms now and they can decorate both of them however they want to.
Just as with the more preparation time a child is given, the more benefits a small child can see that will come about because of this change, the easier it will be for them to adjust to it and be happy.
