Circumcision Argument

A very hot debate in the world of parenting right now is circumcision. Many parents cannot decide whether it is the right thing to do or not, and there are heated discussions on both sides of this debate that feel strongly about their decision. Whether or not you choose to circumcise your son is up to you as a parent, but it is important to make the decision that feels right to you. Remember that, if you decide to circumcise your son and you later find out more information and change your mind, the procedure cannot be undone. This means that it is very important to make this decision before your son is born. If you are having a hard time deciding what it right for you, consider the following questions (these have been reasons many parents have given as why they did or did not circumcise their son):

Is his father circumcised?
Many parents believe that this is an important thing to consider. The father will possibly be the one teaching the child about potty training, and many parents believe that their child might feel weird or strange if they have a penis that looks different than their dad’s. Some parents think this may give their child a complex or make them feel inadequate. There is no research that has been done on this, it is simply what some parents believe and have used as their reasoning when making this important decision.

Cleanliness and Disease
In the past, many parents would have their children circumcised because they believed that having an uncircumcised penis was cause for more diseases and that it was hard to keep clean. Many parents, however, are beginning to step forward and say that this is untrue. The people who say this believe that the only reason an uncircumcised penis would be harder to keep clean and possibly cause problems, is if the child wasn’t properly taught how to clean it. They say that, as long as parents take the time to properly teach their child, there should be no problems.

Appearance
Many parents circumcise their children because it is their preference of appearance, and they believe that their child should look this way. They may also be considering their child’s sex life when they get older when making this decision. They don’t want their child to have any problems because of the appearance of their penis. This is one of those ever-changing situations, though. Many women do prefer uncut men, and many men are very proud of the appearance of their uncircumcised penis.

Pleasure
This is one of those arguments that is hard to prove on either side. Some people strongly believe that a man who is uncut doesn’t experience as much sexual pleasure as a man who has a circumcised penis. At the same time, though, many uncut men say they do experience the same amount or more, and some claim that the cutting of the skin results in less pleasure later in life. Since one cannot experience the other, it is impossible to truly know whether or not this is true, which makes it a very tough argument on both sides.

Pain
This is one that is completely unavoidable and non-debatable. It hurts when a child gets circumcised. While they are newborns when it happens, and they very likely forget the pain shortly afterward, there is no way to deny that it hurts. Most of the time, doctors do not use any anesthesia, either. Whether you think the benefits outweigh the pain factor is up to you as a parent.

Risks
One thing that is important for parents to consider when making this decision about their baby boy is the risks that are involved. Parents will have to doctor the wound for a while, and it is possible for it to get infected. It is also possible that there could be a mishap during the procedure and your child may end up with a misshapen penis or only partially circumcised penis or worse.

Religious Beliefs
Many people make the circumcision decision based solely on their religious beliefs, and this is one very important factor to consider when making this decision.
