Circumcision Care:
When you have a little boy, one of the biggest decisions you will have to make will be whether or not to circumcise. If you decide to have this procedure done on your child, you must be careful to treat it properly afterwards.
• Clean it well—Every time you change your baby's diaper, you will need to clean it as well as possible. Keep in mind, though, that it is still painful and sensitive, so while you must clean it well, you must also be as gentle as possible.
• Doctor it—The best thing to put on a baby's circumcision is Vaseline. This will help keep the covering from sticking and will help protect it from urine (which could make the area burn). You will want to put plenty of Vaseline on there, and the best way to be sure you have all of the painful area covered is to coat it on thickly. There is no harm in putting it on areas that aren't injured, so be very liberal with it.
• Cover it—After putting Vaseline on it, you will need to put gauze on there, as well. This will help protect the area from the diaper rubbing up against it and causing any more pain than necessary.
Once the circumcised area begins to appear less red, you can stop putting the gauze on it, but it is best to continue to use the Vaseline just in case it isn't completely healed yet. Even if your baby is completely healed, Vaseline can work wonders in preventing diaper rash, so it is better to put the Vaseline on even when you aren't sure if it's completely healed. Putting Vaseline on it won't hurt if it's healed, but leaving it off if it's not completely healed definitely can.
