When Babies Won't Stop Crying:
If you have fed your baby, she burped well, shouldn’t have a tummy ache, you changed her diaper, you have done everything you know to do, and she just won't stop crying, there are a few things you can do to help determine what is wrong.
• Take her clothes off—
Sometimes a tag or a certain material will irritate baby's skin. You may take her clothes off and find that she is better within minutes. Just make sure if you do this, that it isn't too cold in the house. If it is cold you can always leave her in just her diaper and wrap a soft blanket around her (preferably one that hasn't ever bothered her). It may also be that the clothes aren't irritating her, but that she is hot. In this case, the temperature of the room should be obvious enough that you don't cover her with a blanket.
• Put more clothes on her—if it is hard to tell whether the baby might be cold, but you know that she's not hot, you can try putting more clothes on her, or wrapping her in a blanket.
• Check the diaper—even if you just changed your baby and you know that there is no way in the world she is wet or dirty, you will still want to change her diaper. Check for any red skin where the tape or pins on the diaper might have been irritating her. You will also want to check to see if the diaper appears too tight or if she has any sign of diaper rash. Either of these things can understandably cause a cranky baby.
• Rub her—babies get itches too, you know. Rub her head softly, and rub her entire body. This can help relieve any itches she may have or any pains she may be feeling. It might also help her to relax, which often leads to less crying.
• When you've checked everything—okay, so you have undressed your baby, you have rubbed her whole body, you have changed her diaper, you have given her tummy medicine, you have put different clothes on, you have covered her up, you have checked her temperature and can't find a single thing wrong with her and nothing you are doing is helping. Since you don't know what's wrong, it makes it nearly impossible to fix it, so what you want to do now is try to occupy her. The following things can work wonders for crying babies, but the trick is to not use any of them until you absolutely have to, because babies can want any or all of them to become a daily habit, and habits like this are hard to break:
Take her outside.
Walk her around the house.
Bounce her.
Go for a ride in the car.
Rock her.
Put teething gel on her gums.
Anything else you can think of.
One of these (or a combination of some of these) may eventually work. It is possible, though, that none of them will, and that the baby will simply end up crying herself to sleep. It's a sad thing when a parent tries to make their baby feel better only to have to watch them be miserable until they cry themselves to sleep. But, take heart, because most likely she will wake up feeling fine.
