Diapers:

When you are expecting a baby, you know of all the things you will need, including bottles, diapers, etc. What you may not be aware of is how much you may need of one very important item: diapers. You may not realize just how many diapers are required to keep a baby dry. It does slowly change, and begin to be less and less diapers required throughout the week, but in the beginning, you will go through diapers like they are going out of style. You will want to be prepared for this by having plenty of diapers on hand. If each newborn needs a diaper change approximately every hour, you will go through nearly 24 diapers each day. That's almost a whole package of diapers per day! You may have thought of this, and you may know that you will need an outrageous number of diapers for your baby's first few months of life.

What you may not have thought of, though, is that it is best to buy several different types of diapers in advance. While it may seem trivial—a diaper is a diaper, some are less absorbent, some are more so—it really isn't. Yes, there are certain brands that you will prefer more than others, and some will work better for your baby than others. What many people tend to not think about, though, is that some kids just can't wear certain diapers. For the most part, babies all have a similar shape, and so do diapers, but as your baby gets bigger, their shape will change some. Some babies have more fat in some places than other babies do, so a diaper that fits perfectly and works like a charm on one baby might not on another. You may discover this too late, though, and you may end up having to use diapers that constantly leak until you run out of those. Except that, there is a secret here. If your baby doesn't fit well in the diapers you have, you can always exchange them for a different brand. Even if the diapers were a gift, or you didn't save the receipt, whatever the case, you can exchange them. Even if they were bought at a large baby store, it doesn't matter. Almost all stores that carry baby products carry the same brands of diapers. Unless they were a particular store's generic brand, you can take them to the nearest Wal-Mart and exchange them for different diapers.

Another thing to remember about diapers that not everyone will tell you is that not all babies can use all diapers. Not just the fit-right issue, but some babies just have too sensitive of skin for some diapers. Each brand of diapers is made differently, and some babies are allergic to certain materials. Even if they aren't allergic, some brands don't absorb as well and may cause more diaper rashes. All babies have sensitive skin, but some babies genetically have more sensitive skin than others. If this is the case, your baby may not be able to tolerate certain less absorbent diapers, even if you change their diaper the second it becomes wet.

If this is the case with your baby, it might just be a matter of trial and error of different brands. If you try all kinds of brands and you can't seem to get your baby's skin to stay clear, you will have one of two options: cloth diapers or keeping creams on them. Cloth diapers are nearly unheard of these days, but there still are people who use them, simply because their babies cannot use disposable diapers. If your baby's skin is so sensitive that it is bothered by the use of disposables, but you can't or don’t want to use cloth diapers, you can keep ointments on them to prevent rashes from appearing. Any leading diaper rash medicine works well as a preventative cream, such as Desitin. Or, another good option is Vaseline. It is way cheaper than diaper rash medication, contains no chemicals, and can help protect your baby's skin from the moisture that causes rashes. If you try this, though, and none work, you may have to resort to cloth diapers to keep your baby from being in pain.
