Doctors and Babies
:

When you are pregnant with your child is the time to start searching for a pediatrician. Many times, your obstetrician will be able to suggest a good pediatrician for you, and it is best to interview the doctors before the baby is even born.

You will also want to use a pediatrician that uses the same hospital as the one where your baby will be born. This is because they will make their first visit shortly after the baby is born, before you ever leave the hospital.

Then, you will need to take your baby for a 2 week check-up, a 6 week check-up, and several more visits within the first year. It is very important that you like your baby's doctor, because you will need to be able to call on them whenever the need arises. If your pediatrician makes you feel like you are stupid when you ask questions (no matter how stupid they may think the question is), then you should consider getting a new doctor. If your baby's doctor doesn't answer your questions to the best of their ability without criticizing you for asking, then you may not feel comfortable asking questions at a later time.
This could possibly endanger the health of your baby, if you put off asking a potentially serious question, or bringing the doctor's attention to a problem, simply because you are afraid of how they will react.

If you aren't satisfied with your pediatrician, or you just haven't found one yet, one of the best ways to do this is to ask around. Ask any and all parents you know if they know of a good baby doctor.

They may use one that they can recommend, or they may know someone who does. This is an excellent way to find a really good doctor, and when it comes from another mother, it is more likely to work out for you, because they are likely seeking the same thing in a pediatrician that you are.

You should also try to get a doctor that is available during the times you need them to be. If it is easiest for you to make Saturday or late evening doctor's appointments, you should try to find a doctor that is open during these hours on occasion.
Granted, it is hard to find a doctor that is open every Saturday, if not impossible. But it is possible to find a doctor's office that is open one Saturday or one late evening a month. It is very important to be able to make your baby's appointments, this way you won't have to worry about them getting behind on visits or shots.

Another availability issue that is important to pay attention to when picking a doctor is whether they are available for you to call in the evening or not, and if they get irritated when you do so. Most doctors will have an answering service that will screen the calls they receive. If they think it is important enough, they will page the pediatrician and have them call you.
Even if it is nothing, your child's doctor should be patient and understanding with you, and if they aren't, you should find one who is.
