Kids and Electronics:

Today's kids have a lot more technology to play with than the generations before them. While this can be a good thing, it often turns into a bad thing before the parents even realize it.

There is nothing wrong with letting your child play on the computer or play video games as long as it is regulated and limited. All too often, kids become addicted to video games and are allowed to play them from the time they can hold a controller. When they begin school, the first thing they want to do when they get home is play the video game or on the computer, and they don't want to stop until bed time.

This is what you should avoid. Not only do you want to avoid too much interest in video games and computer games, you also want to limit their exposure to the wrong type of games or information.

The first step in reducing your child's usage of video games is to recognize the benefits of your child playing them. They increase hand-eye coordination, and (depending on the game they are playing) can help teach your child a few things. Once you think about the benefits of using a video game, you can determine how much your child should be allowed to play it. You know that your child needs no more than an hour a day of play to develop their hand-eye coordination, so why should you allow them to play it any more than that?

The same goes for computers and the internet. A computer offers many abilities that can be great, and the internet offers up much information about anything your child is interested in. But, too many parents will allow their young children to get on the computer and play games for hours on end, or get on the internet and simply talk to their friends for hours. Instead of allowing them to do this, teach them that they should not take advantage of it. Allow them the time that is needed to play a game or do some research about their favorite animal, then scoot them out the door for some outside play time.

Content is another important part that must be paid attention to. With video games, you have to worry about violence and sex, and with computers you have to worry about the same thing. Don't allow your child to play video games that encourage horrible behavior until they are of an age to know the difference between that and real life. You should also use an internet company that allows you to limit your child's access. You can put blocks where they aren't allowed to go to adult sites, and you can even block their e-mail. This is important because it is worse than video games.

At least with a video game, no matter how sexual or how violent the content may be, you don’t have to worry about your child giving your address to a character and them showing up at your door with ill intentions.
