Family Game Night

So many families are constantly on the run these days for many reasons. Nearly 75% of all families have both a working mom and dad, there's housework to be done, yards to be mowed, the kids have to be taken to dance, band, soccer, football, cheerleading, etc., dinners have to be cooked and more. With so much to be done, and so many families who only get to do these things in their off-work time, it makes it very difficult to spend quality fun time together.

While it may seem nearly impossible to find the time for everyone to be together at the same time, it's really not. Family game night doesn't have to take all evening, but it should be a significant amount of time, and it should involve all members of the family. Even if your children are as young as two years old, you can play some games with them. Many great games for this age group include memory games for children, or dominoes (there are some with colored care bears on them so that young children can play, as well as older family members).

It could even be something as simple as having a coloring contest among all the family members (kids judge the parent pictures and parents judge the kid pictures—no names on pictures allowed).
Almost all games will have some type of learning quality to them. Even the card game "Go Fish" can help teach a toddler number recognition. As they get older, the games can teach even more, as you begin to play games that require more thought, such as trivia games or more difficult card games. It is also good to include physical games, at least on occasion, such as Twister or sports that involve all family members.

It is good to try to have a family game night at least once a week or every other week. When families can spend time together having fun, it can promote the quality of life for everyone involved.

Even though in the beginning, it may seem to parents that family game night is simply causing extra stress (since they have to try to find time that essentially isn't available), many soon realize that it is well worth the effort of rearranging a schedule.

Family game night doesn't have to imply board games; it doesn't even have to mean a game at all. The key factor is spending time as a family playing and having fun. It just needs to be something a little more in-depth than watching television together or half the family watching the others do something. It can be equally as beneficial for the parents to swing with the kids, read stories or dance around the house together.

If you can incorporate at least an hour out of the week to spend time playing with your children, be it sports, board games, card games, swinging on a tire swing, or whatever, it can not only help create more closeness within the family, it can also encourage intelligence and promote physical health.
