Food Fights

All children will have food fights at some point or another. There may be one of any number of reasons why the food fight began. It may not have technically been a "fight." Instead, it could have simply been all in fun in the beginning. Or, it may have started out as an argument, one child wasn't getting the results they wanted out of the argument, and they threw some food at the other child.

Then, of course, some food was thrown back, and it continued until all the food in all the bowls and on all the plates was all over the walls, floors, and your children (or until a parent walked in, whichever came first).

How do you prevent food fights?

You really can't. Obviously, you can teach your child the rules of the table and hope that they abide by them as much as possible. You can also help prevent most occurrences by sitting down at the table with your child when it's meal time. But, since you have about eighteen years with your child, 365 days in each of those years, and 3 meals and 2 snacks every one of those days, it is nearly impossible to prevent a food fight from occurring at least once.
Once a food fight has occurred, you should have your child clean up the mess. Not only go take a shower to wash themselves up, but also to scrub the floors, the walls, the table, do the dishes, and to clean anything else that might have gotten food on it.

This is, of course, not as easy to do with younger children, but you can at least have them clean a portion of it.

Just as with everything else, this can help a child remember why they are not supposed to throw food for a much longer period than if the mess just magically disappeared and they just got grounded from the video game for a day or two. Instead of even considering whether the punishment is worth it or not, they will consider whether cleaning up their mess is worth it or not.

This makes sense, too. Why do adults never throw food? Not necessarily because it's not supposed to be done, but more because they simply do not want to have to clean up the mess afterwards. Whatever the food needed to be thrown for can be worked out in other ways. Most adults know this, and children will quickly figure it out after two hours of scrubbing mashed potatoes up off the floor.
