Indulging Children:
There are certain things that are just a standing rule, due to safety issues, parent's preferences, or whatever the reason behind the rule. Every now and then, though, it doesn't hurt to allow them to break harmless little rules. Indulging a child in this little bit of rule-breaking might help them not long to break rules without your permission in the future.
One such rule that might be okay to break (depending on many factors) is the Come Inside the House When it's Raining rule. As long as the rain isn't accompanied by a dangerous storm, or lightning, and your child isn't sick, and it's not really cold outside, it doesn't hurt to allow them to play in the rain. In fact, it can even be fun for an adult.
Go outside with them. Play and get wet and splash in puddles and get muddy right alongside your child. This can be a very fun rule to break, as long as you make it clear that this is a one-time thing.
Another way to do this is if the rule is No Loud Music. It is understandable that this is a rule, but what is the harm if, one day, you turn the stereo on a song everyone likes, turn the music up super loud, and everyone dances around the room? (Of course, if you live on the top floor in an apartment, with neighbors below, this might not be a great rule to break.)
The purpose of doing this type of thing is not to teach your child that it’s okay to break all rules. Instead, the purpose is to be honest with your child about the fact that some rules don’t necessarily exist to protect them, they are there because they are just the rules that the parents made.
You also want to teach your child that indulging in harmless activities every once in a while is an okay thing to do.
Just like if you let your child stay up past their bedtime on the weekends. Yes, during the week, you have to go by the rules: you have to be in bed by 9 PM every night. But, when circumstances change, sometimes the rules do, too.
