Know-it-all
At some point or another, usually once kids start school, children become little know-it-alls. During this very annoying phase, children believe they know everything, and they are willing to argue with you until they convince you that they are right.
They will go so far as to argue with you about the color of the sky if they don’t believe you are right.
While there is really nothing a parent can do to prevent their child from reaching this phase, there are a few ways you can try to wait it out with a little less frustration. These can also limit the time spent arguing over insignificant nonsense:
• Let them believe what they want—
Who cares if they want to believe that Spiderman really is real? Sometimes, during this phase, you have the option of either arguing all day or letting your child believe whatever they want to. Many parents will choose to be argument-free and let their child figure out the truth on their own.
• Make sure they know when they are wrong—
Another way to address this and help them get through this phase a little more quickly is to, without rubbing it in their face, make sure they know that they are wrong. Not on the stuff that’s not provable, like Spiderman, but on the things that can be proven. Be sure and remind them that they were incorrect and that this is okay. The more often they have to face the fact that they really don’t know everything, the more quickly this know-it-all phase can pass.
• Refuse to argue—
This one is more blatantly just for the parent’s sanity and not really to help them pass this phase. While it may or may not help move it along more quickly, the important thing is for the parents to not go crazy in the meantime. So, simply refuse to argue. Even when you know you are correct, even when you can prove it. Who cares? Just keep your sanity and say “okay, whatever you say.”
