Medication Tips and Tricks
Children, even babies, have to get shots fairly often, which can cause them quite a bit of pain and fever. Then, as they start walking, they will begin falling and getting bumps and bruises.
Then, as they get older, and especially once they get in school, more and more opportunities will arise for them to get hurt more and more severely.
And, of course, all throughout this time period, there have been the colds and the flus and the fever, etc.
With all these injuries and illnesses, children have to be given quite a bit of medication. And many time doctors won’t tell you all the information parents need to know about traditional medications.
Some details often go overlooked, but they can be of great assistance to parents. Below are some facts about some of the most common medicines that are given to children on a regular basis:
• Generics and Brand names are the same—
If you don’t have a lot of money, take the time to read the active ingredients in the generic form of whatever type of children’s medicine you plan to buy. If they are the same, then you will be getting the exact same effect with the cheap medicine as you would with the brand name medicine. The biggest difference may be texture and taste, but those are worth spending half the price sometimes.
• Tylenol and Motrin—
These medicines, whether the brand name or generic, can be given to your child at the same time. They both work for fever and pain, but Tylenol is made with acetaminophen, while Motrin is ibuprofen. Tylenol is known for working better for the fever and Motrin is better for pain. Since these two types of medicines will not have cause an adverse effect if taken at the same time, there is no harm in giving them both to your child. The big thing to remember, though, is that this is only with the traditional forms. If you need Tylenol Cold, etc., you shouldn’t mix and match drugs without a doctor or pharmacist giving you the okay.
• Infant drugs are stronger—
You may or may not remember the big problem Tylenol had many years ago when parents thought that infant Tylenol was weaker than children’s Tylenol and they increased dosages and gave them to their children without asking a doctor. Many kids overdosed on Tylenol because of this, so don’t ever give over the amount that is listed on a bottle, even if you are giving it to an older child.
