Modeling - Commercials

Many parents love the idea of trying to put their child in modeling and/or commercials, but there are many points to consider about doing this before making a final decision as to whether you will try to do so or not:

• Could be lifetime commitment—
While the thought of your child becoming a star and being rich and famous may sound appealing to many parents, there are a lot of children who were child actors and wish they had never been put in that position. Living a normal average kid’s life is what they wanted but didn’t get to receive. While your child very well may never have to face this, it is a road that could lead there, so it is important to consider if that is what you would ultimately want for your child if the opportunity were to present itself.

• Does your child like being in the spotlight?
This is something that you should be sure to know before even attempting to put your child into modeling or commercials. It is important to remember, too, that your child may very well love to be in front of everyone in the room singing songs and getting attention all the time, but these are all people he knows. Standing in front of relatives and friends performing is much different than having cameras and lights on them surrounded by strangers with one stranger telling them what to say and how to look. If you don’t think your child would do well in that type of atmosphere, you shouldn’t even attempt to make them try.

• Extra stress on the child—
This is something many parents don’t think about, but is important to evaluate before making a decision. Children really don’t have much stress, and this is because they weren’t meant to. The stress of having homework done on time should be the only stress a child has to deal with in their life. If you have them in commercials and modeling, they will be dealing with a lot of undue stress. You will need to determine if the pressure they will feel will outweigh the amount of fun that they will have doing it. If so, you shouldn’t allow your child to do it, or you should pull them out immediately when this happens.

• Watch who you deal with—
In the event that you think it would be more good than bad to try to put your child in modeling or commercials, you need to do research on whatever company you decide to go with. Many child modeling and acting agencies are set up as scams to take your money and supply you with nothing but some pictures of your child (that you could have gotten at any studio for a lot cheaper).

• Always be around—
Another thing that you should do if you decide to have your child do these kinds of things is to always be around. Whether it’s interviews, modeling shoots, commercial tapings, whatever it is, you should be in the room that everything is going on in. No matter how reputable a company is, you should never leave your child alone in a room with people you don’t know (even if there are a bunch of people, you can never be too safe). If they tell you that you can’t be in the room, don’t let your child do it. (You will also want to read all contracts before signing them and make sure there is no stipulation like this before you sign.)
