Music for Babies:

Babies react to music just as adults do, and this is something to remember whether you are playing music specifically for baby, or baby just happens to be in the room with you while you are listening to music.

Whatever the case, you should make sure that the music surrounding baby is reflective of how you want them to feel.

If you are ready for your child to go to sleep, you should probably not play heavy metal music. Likewise, if you are trying to keep your child awake and energetic, you do not want to play classical, or some other type of music that will make the baby relax and want to go to sleep.

At night time, if you put on classical, it can help the baby sleep, and some studies have shown that babies who listen to classical music while they are sleeping grow up to be more intelligent adults.

Another good thing to let baby listen to when they are sleeping, or are trying to go to sleep, is CD's of nature sounds, such as rain or ocean sounds. These can help your baby relax and sleep better.

When you don't want your baby to fall asleep yet, but they are very tired, you can help them stay awake by playing upbeat music. Most little ones love to dance to music and putting on something uplifting can help them stay awake longer.

Listening to soundtracks from cartoons and children's movies is always a good idea. Babies tend to like higher pitched sounds, and most of the time these types of CD's offer such sounds in their music.

You will also not want to play too-loud music around your baby, because their eardrums are very sensitive. Subjecting your baby to loud music on a regular basis can damage their hearing for life.

Basically, listening to music around baby, or having your baby specifically listen to music, should be based around each situation. Music affects moods, including babies. It can wind them up or wind them down, and what you have them listen to should be based on how you want them to feel at the moment.

Granted, it may not always help to change your baby's mood, or help them sleep, but recognizing that it can affect them just as it does adults can help you regulate your baby's listening accordingly.
