Natural Parenting:

One style of parenting that some people prefer to use is called the natural parenting style. For the most part, this generally means that the whole ordeal is led by the child. There are many defining characteristics, including the following:

• The mother eats healthfully before, during and after pregnancy to help the child be as healthy as possible.

• Birth is usually more natural—not only do parents using this method prefer to give birth with no medication; many times they will even have a nurse-midwife come into their home to deliver the baby there.

• They breast feed their babies, believing that it is more healthy.

• They let the baby guide the feeding times as opposed to setting a specific schedule for feeding times.

• They often let the baby lead the weaning from the breast, waiting until the baby is ready, which means that they will easily breast-feed for over a year.

• Cloth diapers are often used instead of disposables.

• The use of material soothers, such as bouncers, pacifiers, strollers, etc. is frowned upon. They prefer that the parent promote human bonding and that the parents instinctually figure out what is causing baby problems and solve those problems without material, store bought items.

• Parents who use this method strive to have at least one parent at home with the child during the day, because they frown on having babysitters or daycares raise their child.

• They do not believe in spoiling a child with material things, but they do not believe that you can give your child too much attention.

• Often, parents who use this method will home-school their children.

• They believe that the parent-child bond is one of the most important parts of parenting, and this type of parenting is also called attachment parenting. They believe in bed-sharing, etc.

One of the complaints of opponents is that it creates too much attachment—that the children rely too much on the parents for everything. The advocates for natural parenting say that they recognize this, but that their children will still grow up to be healthy happy individuals.
