Older Kids and Music

The moment you utter the words "Turn that done!" you may stop and contemplate how much you sound like your own parents. Nothing changes more from childhood to adult hood than our tastes in music. A song that was once your favorite tune can now cause headaches of epic proportions. And so it begins, the constant struggle to monitor and change what your child chooses to listen to. When deciding just how much you will limit your child's choices, it is a good idea to keep in mind a few simple tips.

• As long as the lyrics are not offensive or in bad taste, it is probably best to allow your child to listen to it. Nothing makes a certain song more enticing than not being allowed to listen to it.

• Listen to an entire CD or album before allowing your child to listen it. If you just listen to the first few songs you may believe the entire album is harmless when it really isn't. Although listening to thirteen songs by an artist that sounds more like a cat in pain than a musical genius may not be your idea of a good time, it is imperative that you be fully aware of the messages your child is hearing.

• Use warning labels to make good choices for your children. Many store require the use of parental advisory labels to help parents keep track of what their children are listening to. If a certain album bears such a label, limit its use to older children, such as teenagers.

• Shop at stores that refuse to sell offensive music. This way, your children will be free to browse on their own and pick out any title that piques their interest.

• Be strict with the volume control. Do not allow your child to listen to music that is too high in volume. Although we most likely did it as children, studies have proven that listening to loud music leads repeatedly during childhood leads to hearing loss later in life.

• Monitor what kinds of music your child borrows from friends. As is always the case, your child's friends may be able to listen to music that you do not approve of. Do not assume that just because that child is allowed to listen to it, you would be fine with it also.

• Make listening to music a family affair. Many children find that they like listening to a wide variety of music. Just because they think that they will hate your music, doesn’t mean they will. Plan a music night and let everyone choose different artists and genres to listen to. Yes, this means that you will have to sit through a few of their choices, but you just might find yourself enjoying it.

• Encourage your child to play a musical instrument. Aside from the many benefits that they will receive from learning to read and play music, playing an instrument also teaches your child to appreciate true music. This understanding can lead to more sophisticated, and appropriate music choices.
If after following these tips you still find yourself arguing constantly with your child about their choice of music, try to remember that it is probably just a phase. All children gravitate towards unconformity at some point as they mature. Just be patient, buy some earplugs and wait for the phase to pass.
