Pool and Hottub Safety
There are many different water activities that families tend to do during the summertime, and pools and hot tubs are often at the very top of that list. While most people know and follow safety guidelines for fun water play during the summertime, you may not be aware of all of them. Below is a list of ways to keep your child safe during pool and hot tub play:
Pool Safety
• Don’t rely on lifeguards—
Lifeguards are definitely there to watch the swimmers and to rescue anyone that they see who is having trouble. But, what if the lifeguard is busy with someone else and your child starts having problems? This is why it is important to always watch your child, and only rely on the lifeguard as backup in case something happens and you don’t know what to do or can’t get there quickly enough.
• Obey posted rules—
This one might seem easy, but children often like to try to ignore the rules. So, as a parent, you should enforce those rules (such as no diving in shallow ends and no running) since your child breaking them could result in serious injury. If you see your child breaking one of the rules of the pool, you should make them sit in time out from the pool for a while so that they will take the rules more seriously in the future. If they get mad and have a bad attitude, they always have the option of leaving instead of obeying the rules.
• Protect them in other ways, too—
Don’t forget to protect them from sunburns by using sunblock, and you can protect their eyes from burning after the exposure to chlorine by providing them with goggles.
Hot Tub Safety
• Overheating danger—
Infants and small children overheat much faster than adults, but they can’t likely tell you how hot they are, so if you will have a young child in a hot tub, you should turn the temperature of the water down.
• Jets—
These can pull the child under the water and cause a drowning hazard, so be sure to be with the child at all times and keep a close eye on them.
• Chlorine tabs—
These dissolving tabs have concentrated amounts of chlorine in them, and many people place them in the filter basket of a hot tub. The only bad thing about these is that, if a child gets curious and picks one up, it can cause burns on their hands or anything else than touches it.
