Do Not Be Quiet for Baby:

When a baby first comes home from the hospital, they sleep constantly. And the parent's first instinct is almost always to be quiet so the baby can sleep. They want their baby to be well-rested and, as the baby gets older, they want them to nap as long as possible. This isn't always a good idea though.

If you bring your baby home, and you always instruct everyone to be as quiet as possible, this is what your baby will become accustomed to. They will need total silence to be able to sleep. For a while, this isn't such a bad thing. Anything can be accomplished for a very short period of time. The problem comes when, your baby is six months old, it's naptime, and you have company.

Will you ask your houseful of guests to whisper? And, if you don't, will your baby wake up? You probably won't, and your baby probably will.

The secret to not having to tiptoe for your baby to stay asleep is to never do it in the first place. One of the great things about newborns is that, when they are first born, they are not used to anything about the world around them. Everything they become accustomed to is what you allow.

This means that if you bring home a baby from the hospital, and you never whisper around them, they will learn very shortly to sleep through the noise. If you play the radio or leave the television at normal volume, they will sleep through that, as well. They will naturally learn to sleep harder than if you are always silent when they are sleeping.

It doesn't take long for them to get used to it, either. In the very beginning, the slightest noise may wake your sleeping child, but at that stage, everything is new and surprising. After as short a time as a couple of weeks, your baby will be able to sleep through whatever they have gotten used to sleeping through. What is great about this, too, is that they will likely continue this sleep pattern as they get older, meaning that you won't have to tiptoe around a sleeping toddler or child. This is particularly a good thing since children often go to bed much earlier than their parents.

If the parents are always having to whisper and be extremely quiet every time their little one is asleep, this means two things:

The parents will always have to be super quiet even when guests are around or they are watching t.v., etc.

The children will likely get woken up on a regular basis, anyway.

It is simple to avoid this situation, though, by simply starting your newborn off in an environment that doesn't lower its volume for a sleeping baby.
