Rainy Day Fun

There are lots of times when parenting can get rough, but one of the roughest times is when it is raining outside. Children, by nature, love to play outdoors, so when the weather turns bad most parents find themselves presented with a chorus of "I'm bored". Instead of buying numerous toys that unfortunately your child will soon tire of, it is best to turn rainy days into family fun and games days. In the paragraphs to follow you will find many games and tips to help ease the boredom of rainy days. Most of these games can be played with little or no money or prior preparation. And most of the games can be adapted, so that as your children grow older they will still remain fun.

Rainy Day Treasure Hunt: To play this game you will just need some paper, a pen and a small prize for your child to hunt for. The prize can be something as simple as a note that says, "I love you", or a piece of candy or a small toy. To play you simply draw the image of some common household items, such as the TV, the sofa, the bathtub, or a door, on a sheet of paper. To make the game more exciting it is best to draw at least ten images. Once you are done drawing you will need to tape the images up in a certain order. For example, start with the image of a TV; hold that paper back to give to your children to start the adventure. On the T, tape a picture of the bathtub. On the bathtub, tape a picture of the door. And continue on, always taping the next picture on the item that the last picture leads your child to. On the item that the last picture depicted, hide the prize. To begin the adventure, hand your child the first picture and tell them that it is a clue. Tell them to find the item and there they will see their next clue.

To make this game more fun for older children you can write clues instead of draw them and make the clues more of a riddle so that they first have to figure out what the item is before they run to find it.

Rainy Day Dough: Instead of picking up a pack of clay the next time you are at the store, opt instead to buy the ingredients to make your own dough. This way the children will get two activities out of one. First, they will get to make the dough, and then they will get to play with it. To make the dough, simply mix one cup of flour with ¼ cup of water and ¼ cup of salt. You can add food coloring to make the dough more festive. If the dough begins to harden, you can mix in more water or you can set any masterpieces out to dry for twenty-four hours and they will harden.

Rainy Day Talent Show: All children love the opportunity to be the center of attention. What better way to play up this trait than with a show dedicated to them and their favorite talent? If time permits, you can go all out and even decorate a stage area with a hanging curtain and homemade decorations. Once everything is in place and your child is in costume, use your best announcer's voice to introduce your budding star. Then, all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the show. For a more time-consuming activity, have your child change costumes and put on an entire program of fun.

Enjoying the Rain: if it’s a mild day and the rain isn't coming down too hard, then there is no rule that says that you can't go outside and enjoy what nature is giving you. Don some old clothes and shoes that can stand getting wet and "play" for a few minutes in the weather. Notice the smell of the rain, try to catch raindrops on your tongue, collect water to quench the thirst of your indoor plants. Or just take a short walk and point out how different the world looks when it's covered in rain.

The best thing about rainy day games is that they are reserved for rainy days. This once-in-awhile concept makes the games more fun and puts a special light on the times that your child gets to enjoy them.
