Religion

Children are curious and they question everything. This means that, no matter what religion you are raising your child with, they are bound to question it. This is especially true once they have an opportunity to meet someone of another faith. This will make them want to know more about why you follow the one that you do.

And, unfortunately, saying “just because” will not suffice.

It is best to know as many important facts about other religions as possible so that you can actually answer your child’s questions with honesty. This way you are able to point out real differences between the two (or three or four) religions, and explain more thoroughly why you believe the one that you follow.

It is also very important to teach your child at this point that they should not judge others because their beliefs are different. Regardless of how you feel about the religion that your child is asking about, it is important to remember that today’s society requires political correctness.

This means that you can impart your beliefs on your child as strongly and as heavily as you want, but you don’t want to get them in trouble in their community or at school because they have a prejudice attitude. They need to instead be taught to accept others for what they are, even if the beliefs differ.

Another important point when trying to discuss religion with your child is to try to have an open mind. This isn’t always easy, especially if your child is challenging your beliefs, but it is important.

You don’t want your child to ignore everything you say because they think you are close-minded. Instead, tell them it is up to them to believe what they want to believe, and that you will respect that.

You should have as much information as possible to be able to back up your religious arguments and beliefs, and you should not dismiss your child’s questions or opinions. If you get defensive or act like they don’t know what they are talking about, you can possibly shut off all conversations about religion right then and there.

If this happens, your child may end up chasing after a different religion without your guidance because he won’t tell you what he’s doing.
Whatever religion you follow, it is important to teach your child about faith. No matter what religion anyone is a part of, the biggest aspect is faith, so instilling this in your child will not likely push them on one side or another. Instead, it will show them the similarities in religions.

If you follow a certain religion and wish for your child to do the same when they grow up (or expect them to do the same when they grow up), you should not limit their access to other information. If you do this, you are sure to push them in the opposite direction.
Instead, giving your child an open dialogue, along with an open mind, is the more accurate approach.
