Safety:
It is very important to protect your children from getting hurt as much as possible. This is why, when they were babies, you limited their access to almost everything. Now that they are older, though, this is very difficult to do, because they can get past locks on cabinets and outlet covers, etc.
This is also the time when your child will need to use more things and do more things that can be dangerous. Your child will learn to ride a bike, and they need to be safe while doing so, and they will have to use scissors for school, and they need to understand how to be safe then, too.
You should try to protect your child as much as possible from access to things that can injure them, but as they get older this will become less possible and less realistic. This is when it is time to start teaching your child how to be safe. The following are some very important safety lessons you should impart to your children:
• Look both ways before crossing the road—this seems so simple, but can be easily forgotten.
• Never run with scissors or other sharp objects—children tend to want to run wherever they go, and they would never think about how dangerous running with a sharp object might be, so you need to teach them. You should also teach them to hold scissors by the closed blades, that way if they were to fall, there is much less of a chance that they will get hurt.
• Wear safety helmet and pads when riding a bike—this also applies to riding roller blades, skates, a skateboard, or anything else that is known for causing children to fall and injure themselves.
• Always wear a seatbelt—it is very important to teach your child to get in the habit of doing this. While you are always there to tell them to put it on, you won't always be with them, and whoever is driving with your child may not think about it. If your child does it because it is habit, you will never have to worry about them skipping this safety rule when you aren't around.
• No flips in the house—it is important to teach your child that there is a time and place for everything. If you don't get your child to follow this rule and try to be safe, when you are out and the babysitter is there, they may end up hurting themselves seriously by acting wild in the house where there are too many objects in the way.
• Always tell parents where they are going—this is a big one. A parent knowing where their child is at all times is very important, and promotes safety. If your child is playing outside and doesn't ever have to tell you when they are going in someone's house, you will probably not worry when you don't see them in your yard. This makes it nearly impossible to know soon if something bad happens. By keeping the rule in place that the parent needs to know where the child is at all times, if the child suddenly disappears, they know to immediately figure out what is going on.
• Never talk to strangers—this is one that is very difficult to convince your child of, and it should begin from the moment they can understand what a stranger is. While the chances of your child being abducted are slim, it still can happen, and it is very important to teach them in the very beginning not to ever talk to strangers, and to come tell you immediately if a stranger ever tries to get them to go anywhere with them.
