Screaming:
One of the many phases that your baby may go through is the screaming phase. Once they have discovered how high of a pitch they can reach with their voice, most babies will begin to use it on a regular basis.
Since it is such a high pitch, it can become quite annoying very quickly. Since this phase usually comes before they are even walking well (or possibly not at all), they may not even understand how bothersome it is.
There are a couple of ways you can try to battle this new bad habit:
• Try to distract them. You can do this by pointing at something to get their attention, or by holding up a toy for them to look at. This works much better if it is a toy that makes some sort of noise or lights up. Anything that has sound and lights provides a better distraction than toys that don't.
• Drown them out with more noise. You can do this a couple of ways, such as by screaming right along with them. This one actually works a couple of ways: you are not only drowning out their scream, but you are also distracting them. It is very likely that your child has never heard you scream a high-pitched scream before, so if you do it, they will probably stop what they are doing to listen and watch you. This might also backfire, though, because they might become confused and think it is a game.
• Slightly pop their mouth. Many parents disagree with this method, and many parents don't. It isn't a pop to hurt them; it is simply a pop to get their attention and to draw their attention to their mouth. This is why you are tapping the mouth. You want them to realize that it is their mouth that is causing the problem, and the only way to do that is to bring their focus to their mouth.
• Grab their tongue. This one isn't intended to hurt them at all, either. It is more of a distraction thing. If they are screaming, and you reach over and grab or touch their tongue, they are most likely going to stop screaming to try to figure out what you are doing. Then, if they don't like the way it feels when you do it, maybe it will help them to stop screaming so often.
You may try all of these things, and you may still have a baby that screams all the time on your hands. The only thing to do now, if you have exhausted all your efforts, is to continue to try as many things as possible, and to hope the phase passes quickly.
