Strep Throat
Strep throat is a very common infection in children that infects the tonsils and causes tonsillitis. Below is some information regarding strep throat symptoms, treatments and more:
• The symptoms of strep throat—
Usually occurring only in children over 3 years of age, strep throat usually starts out as a fever, sore throat and possibly the appearance of a white coating on the tonsils.
• Treatments of strep throat—
When you suspect that your child has strep throat, you will need to take him to the doctor for a culture test. If it is determined that your child does have strep throat, your child will be required to take antibiotics for treatment. It is important to continue the full amount of prescribed antibiotics so that your child does not get rheumatic fever.
• Contagiousness—
Strep throat is extremely contagious up until your child has been taking antibiotics for 48 hours. This means that if you suspect your child has strep throat, you should keep him out of school until you can take him to the doctor to determine that this is what it is and begin treatment.
• Tonsillitis and Tonsillectomies—
Many parents hear the word tonsillitis and are afraid that this may mean that their child will have to have a tonsillectomy. This usually is only true with children that have extreme recurrent cases, though. This means that they have either had five episodes of strep throat in one year, or four infections during one year for two years in a row.
• Prevention—
While there is no way to guarantee prevention of strep throat, since it is often caught at school or another public place, there are a few things parents can do to prevent it along with preventing reoccurrences. Teaching your child to wash their hands thoroughly several times a day can help prevent many bacterial infections as well as strep throat. If your child has been infected with strep throat, it is important to throw their toothbrush away and buy them a new one as soon as the strep throat has gotten better. The bacteria that causes strep throat is believed to live on toothbrushes, so not sharing another’s toothbrush is an important thing to instill in your child, as well.
