Teething:
Teething is one of the many unpredictable things that babies have to go through. It can start anywhere from 3 months old all the way up to a year old, though the younger and older end of that gap are uncommon ages for a baby to get their first tooth. The average age for a baby to get their first tooth is around 6 months, and this varies widely.
When your baby first starts cutting their first tooth, you may not quite realize what is going on. Many babies will begin gnawing on everything, drooling more, running fever, and being extremely cranky. If your baby has all of these symptoms, you can expect that they will probably cut their first tooth soon.
This may last for several days, and your baby may cry a lot, and be very clingy. This is perfectly normal, and once the tooth has broken through, with a couple of days your baby should feel better.
While your baby is cutting teeth, you can help ease her pain by putting numbing gel on her gums, giving her Tylenol, and giving her something to chew on that will help the tooth cut through the gums, such as a frozen teething toy.
Usually, but not always, the first tooth is a bottom one, and is almost always followed shortly thereafter by the second tooth. Then there may be quite a time lapse before the next tooth appears.
Depending on what tooth your baby is growing in, they may also have an upset stomach, and they may throw up. If your baby is throwing up, but isn't showing the other signs of cutting teeth, you should probably call your doctor, because they may want you to bring the baby in, just in case it is a stomach virus.
Otherwise, teething is just a natural, albeit painful, part of the many things that a baby must endure. The only thing a parent can do is try to ease the pain with medication until the teeth come in.
