Traveling with Kids:
Babies are hard to travel with, and so are toddlers, but as those children get a little older traveling can become a lot more enjoyable. Even the most well behaved kid, though, can get restless after hours in a car, on a plane, or on a train. So, you may want to prepare for the trip in advance to make it as enjoyable as possible for the entire family. There are many things you can take along on your trip to keep a small child occupied, such as the following:
• Video games—with gameboys being as popular as they are, you may have already invested in this one. These make great road trip accessories, and can keep your kids occupied for hours on end. Another less expensive way to take video games along is to buy the individual games that can be found in almost any game isle in any store.
• Other games—this can include the small magnetic kinds of games that are meant for travel, small puzzles, cards, and more.
• Art Supplies—this can vary from a coloring book to blow pens to markers with felt posters and stickers to color. Obviously on a long trip you may not want to take paints with you, or anything else that will make a big mess for you to have to clean, but small art items that are less messy can occupy your child for a very long time.
• Books—unless you are in a car, and reading will make your child carsick, you should take plenty of books or books on tape with you. If your child can't yet read, the books on tape will work perfectly, or, if you aren't driving, you can read the books to him.
• DVD Player—this can be the kind that mounts on the headrest of the front seat in a car for the child to watch, or the kind that sets in their lap. These can be great, especially if you stock up on videos for the trip.
• Other small toys—there are many other types of toys you can take for your child, such as little dinosaurs or army men, or little baby dolls.
Whatever you decide to take for your child to play with, read, etc, you should bring new toys with you on the trip. Since they haven't played with it before, it will occupy them for a longer portion of the trip. If you take something with you that they watch or play with on a regular basis, they won't play with it on the trip for very long at all.
You can either have your child pick out the things for the trip, or pick them yourself and surprise your child while you are on the trip. This makes it a lot more fun, and if you do this, it is best to only show the child half of the things on the trip there, and the other half on the trip back.
If you are in a car, you will want to make frequent stops for your child to be able to stretch their legs. If your child is extremely uncomfortable, the trip will be miserable for them. If you are on a plane for a long time, let them walk to the bathroom as often as they need to. One of the best ways to travel with children of this age, if the time for your trip will allow it, is the train. Riding a train is so neat to most kids, that just looking out the window provides entertainment for a while. Plus, this is a good way to go because the child doesn't have to sit still for really long periods. At any point, you can walk with your child from car to car and stretch your legs.
